Aims to reduce suicides by 20% of 1997 rate by 2010.

Incorporated into both Saving lives – our healthier nation (Department of Health 1998) and Modernising mental health (Department of Health 1998).

A budget of £700 million over three years (1999-2002).

The Department of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health produce an annual report on the status of the strategy, detailing progress made, reporting on the results of pilots and outlining future initiatives.  See the National suicide prevention strategy for England annual report on progress 2004.
