Employment zones

Starting dates 1998: initiated
2002: extended to 2004

Budget/target/comment

Each Zone is situated in an area of high unemployment and aims to get 15-20% improvement in moving selected groups into work.  There are 15 zones in total.

Government figures are that 70,000 people had moved into jobs by July 2006, 58,000 of which were sustained jobs and 12,000 lasted less than 13 weeks.  See the DWP website for the latest statistics.

A budget of £250 million for 1998-2003.
