Drug misuse
Key points
- Drug misuse is most prevalent in the major urban centres - particularly Glasgow City, Dundee and Aberdeen - and least in the more rural areas. The rate in Glasgow is around four times that in many of the more rural authorities.
- It is estimated that the prevalence of drug misuse among young adults is lower in Glasgow than in several other authorities, including Inverclyde as well as Dundee and Aberdeen. Estimating the national and local prevalence of problem drug misuse in Scotland, Hay G. et al, September 2001.
- Data from the Scottish schools survey 2000 reveals that 22% of 15 year olds reported drug use in the previous month and 30 % in the previous year. Cannabis was by far the most likely drug to have been used. Scottish Drug Misuse Statistics Scotland 2001, ISD Scotland, 2001, pages 9 to 10.

Definitions and data sources
The graph shows how estimated proportion of the population aged 15 to 54 misusing opiates and/or benzodiazepines in the year 2000 varies by local authority.
The data source is the report Estimating the National and Local Prevalence of Problem Drug Misuse in Scotland published by the Centre for Drug Misuse Research, University of Glasgow and the Scottish Centre for Infection and environmental Health.
Overall adequacy of the indicator: limited. The data does not say anything about trends over time and is somewhat dated.
